WHAT IS OBSOLESCENCE?

The term ‘Obsolescence’ is defined as the state of being which occurs when an object, service or practice is no longer used or wanted. Obsolescence Clothing challenges this idea and utilises aspects of reused and recycled materials to create new garments and silhouettes. We are constantly trying to improve our techniques through ethical design and development.

2018 marked the birth of Obsolescence Clothing, Vince Ropitini’s independent label inspired by cultural sustainability, contemporary art and tailored menswear. He has since graduated from Massey University, completing a Bachelor of Design with First Class Honours in Fashion.

At Obsolescence, we want to provide an inclusive and accepting space that challenges the ideas of identity and expression, removing the boundaries that hold many people back. Through our garments, and editorials, we hope to share a positive message that inspires and uplifts the community. Our most recent collection ‘The Art of Passive Resistance’ acknowledges the history of Parihaka, and establishes kōrero around identity and what it means to be Māori. Referencing key attributes found in contemporary Māori art, Vince shares his own narrative, and that of his whakapapa.
